Basilica of Our Lady

In the middle of the 13th century, a guillemite priory was built in Marienthal, very close to Haguenau. Its church quickly became the object of a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This primitive sanctuary was replaced around 1500 by a Gothic church. From 1720 to 1725, Stanislas Leczinski, deposed king of Poland, installed in Wissembourg, and his daughter Maria came several times a year to Marienthal, before Marie Leczinska became queen of France through her marriage to Louis XV.
In 1863, Charles Morin, the architect of the town of Haguenau, carried out expansion work which made it possible to accommodate increasing numbers of pilgrims. Today, the Marienthal basilica remains a welcoming place (see the dedicated website).
