The Fort of Schoenenbourg, located in Hunspach - voted the French people's favorite village in 2020 - is a large artillery fort of the Maginot Line, built between 1931 and 1935.
30 meters underground, it extends over nearly 3 kilometers of fully equipped underground galleries from the original date: electricity production plant, kitchen, barracks, engine room and of course, the impressive combat blocks.
The most heavily bombarded fort on the Maginot Line, it remained undefeated, surrendering only on orders from High Command. Restored since the 1980s by a team of passionate volunteers, the site now offers a unique visitor experience, allowing you to discover all the installations of a complete, preserved, and vibrant military fortification.
Ranked second favorite monument of the French in 2022, the Fort of Schoenenbourg is much more than a relic: it is a place of memory, history and emotion.
