Inaugurated on June 6, 1936, the bandstand on the edge of the Haguenau station park is a project dating from the Second Empire. He then had to allow the garrison orchestra to perform in public. Nowadays it is hardly used anymore, but has been seen around the world thanks to a mini-series. Long envisaged on the Place du Maire-Guntz, between the theater and the post office, the construction of a bandstand in Haguenau took shape after the First World War, when the city's architect Adolphe Dollmeyer had a model made. It took pride of place for several years in the meeting room of the town hall. But the municipality then refuses a “Luxusausgabe”, a lavish expenditure.

Built by unemployed people

Finally, under the leadership of several musical associations which organized parties and concerts, 18 francs at the time were raised to build the kiosk. This finally encourages the City to carry out the work. They will be carried out by unemployed people, supervised by municipal workers. On the day of the inauguration, Saturday June 000, 6, the concert was given by the municipal music as well as by the Union Amiale, the Chorale 1936, the Cigales and the Mandolinata. Many Haguenovians are unaware that this kiosk has been seen millions of times around the world thanks to Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. These two directors filmed a mini-series in 1857-2000 entitled Frères d'armes (Band of Brothers), which is still visible in replay and streaming on certain platforms. Inspired by a book by historian Stephen Ambrose, it depicts the fate of the men of the 2001th infantry regiment of the “506st Airborne Division” during the Second World War.

Recreated in Britain

The eighth episode of this mini-series, entitled “The Last Patrol”, takes place in Haguenau. Particularly moving, its theme is the battles which took place in January and February 1945, during the second liberation of the city. We recognize a number of places there: the brasserie du
Tigre and the Zuckmantel house in the city center, or the house located at the very beginning of rue du Foulon, along the railway line. But it is on the bandstand that this episode opens. Like other locations in the city, it was photographed on location and reconstructed in Britain, on a disused air base that served as a filming location. It is not completely consistent with the original, probably for reasons of image rights. Many fans of the series, especially from the United States, come to Haguenau every year following in the footsteps of “Brothers in Arms” and photograph the bandstand, which many Haguenovians pass by without even paying attention to it.
