At the beginning of the 20th century, the Dishlach mill was modified to provide hydraulic energy to a carpentry. The surviving mechanism that we see today is that of the old sawmill. The whole thing ceased to function in December 1944, due to lack of water supply, when the SS dynamited the bridges in town. In 1978, the buildings were demolished to make way for new buildings on the Cours de la Décapole.
Today, you only see the remains, including a paddle wheel and part of the transmission mechanism dating from the 19th century... Remember, Haguenau was originally an island formed by two arms of the Moder... The mill was located on one of these arms which is now filled in. Indeed, it is here that the two branches of the river which formed the island where Barbarossa's castle was located.
The mill is located at the intersection of two former major traffic routes:
- a salt road, oriented east-west, which ran along the Moder
- and another, north-south, going from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean.
Through the latter, amber and bronze objects found in the numerous prehistoric tombs of the Haguenau forest passed.
