Olwisheim is a village street. The site of the municipality of Olwisheim is relatively old, at least since the Roman period. The nearby town of Brumath, about 7 km away, was a Roman military center known as Brotomagus. The town of Olwisheim is the scene of the survival of an old Alsatian tradition, the Maie or Maiestecke, also called “Les Arbres de Mai”. This tradition takes place as follows: every year in May, the eve of Ascension Thursday, the young people of the village (only men over fourteen, single) meet in the central square of the village. (Place des Tilleuls). Their mission is as follows: discreetly place a tree in front of certain houses during the night; those where young unmarried girls over fourteen live. The sidewalk is generally partly covered with straw. Each year, the town of Olwisheim, on the evening of July 13, celebrates the storming of the Bastille. The mayor's speech opens the evening, punctuated musically by the local choir. Annual occasion of common rejoicing, this evening of July 13 usually takes place in the central square of the village. Traditionally, we proceed with the distribution of July 14 Wecke (a traditional pastry, kind of brioche man).
